Pilates is an exercise system with and without apparatus based on eight basic principles with the aim to improve flexibility and strength and to create balance in the body. It includes comprehensive regulation of the physical functions and leads to physical and mental relaxation. It's particularly effective for back and posture problems.

Training should be thought of in terms of a movement continuum. As humans, we perform a wide range of movement activities, such as walking, jogging, running, sprinting, jumping, lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, turning, standing, starting, stopping, climbing and lunging. All of these activities involve smooth, rhythmic motions in the three cardinal planes of movement-sagital, frontal and transverse.

Training to improve functional strength in the Pilates system involves more than simply increasing the force-producing capability of a muscle or group of muscles. Rather, it requires training to enhance the coordinated working relationship between the nervous and muscular systems.

Functional strength training and Pilates involves performing work against resistance in such a manner that the improvements in strength directly enhance the performance of movements so that an individual’s activities of daily living are easier to perform. Simply stated, the primary goal of functional training is to transfer the improvements in strength achieved in one movement to enhancing the performance of another movement by affecting the entire neuromuscular system.

What it is

Gyrokinesis leads the practitioner through graceful, circular movements that loosen and rejuvenate the body and help the mind relax and focus. Like yoga, it is often taught in small classes requiring only the bod and the option of a mat and stool. Gyrokinesis exercises, however, are uniquely based on circular patterns built around seven natural spinal movements: forward, backward, left side, right side, left twist, right twist and circular. Gyrokinesis improves flexibility and balance, strengthens muscles and joints, and invigorates the cardiovascular system through breathing synchronized with the exercises. There is both gentleness and challenge to the movements so that students can master them at their own pace. The freestanding nature of the exercises makes them easy to practice anywhere and to gain the benefit of feeling more relaxed, flexible, and at ease in one’s body.

Benefits

Improves overall conditioning

Strengthens muscles and joints

Builds core strength

Increases flexibility and coordination

Improves posture and balance

Promotes relaxation and sense of well-being

Enhances athletic performance

Provides safe, whole-body conditioning for dancers

Utilized in many rehabilitation and physical therapy programs

About the Gyrotonic Expansion System

The Gyrotonic Expansion System® is a powerful exercise system that anyone can do to improve strength, stamina, flexibility, and coordination. Founded by Juliu Horvath, a former ballet dancer and yoga practitioner, this revolutionary system incorporates movements from yoga, swimming, dance and tai chi to provide total body conditioning. The sweeping circular and spiraling movements guide the body through its full range of motion in three dimensions, gently stretching and strengthening muscles and joints, promoting cardiovascular fitness, and improving flexibility and balance. A Gyrotonic workout is challenging and fun, leaving your body and spirit refreshed and more relaxed.

The System offers two complimentary modalities, Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis. Gyrotonic exercises are performed using beautiful custom equipment that allows for complete three-dimensional freedom of movement while safely supporting the body. Instruction is usually private or duet. Gyrokinesis consists of fluid, revitalizing movements and postures using only the body and is often taught in small classes.

To learn more about the Gyrotonic Expansion System, please visit www.gyrotonic.com.

Gyrotonic

Gyrotonic offers whole body conditioning through exercises performed on custom equipment that allows for complete freedom of movement while safely supporting the body. A freestanding sculpture for bodywork, each beautiful piece of equipment can be adjusted to fit different body types and the requirements of individual client sessions. The instructor guides the client through movements that gently utilize full range of motion to condition, strengthen, and align the body along its natural rotational axes.

Gyrotonic practice strengthens and stretches muscles throughout the body while strengthening and stimulating joints through their full range of motion. The sweeping circular and spiraling movements work naturally with the spine to enhance strength, stability, flexibility, and balance. The practitioner breathes in synchronized patterns with the exercises to promote aerobic conditioning and a sense of overall well-being.

A Nutrition Therapy workshop is the latest in Teresina's quest for continuing education. Other recent workshops included one dedicated to the shoulder and one dedicated to the breath and Gyrokinesis. Teresina sees her job as facilitating the process of bringing all areas of fitness into balance for her clients.

Teresina attended the Nutrition Therapy workshop presented by Standard Process which makes organic, locally produced nutrients and supplements. This was a very eye-opening experience that highlighted the science of nutrition and how it affects the bodies muscular responses. Overall the information and supplements are a great resource of holistic remedies for conditions arising from stress that affect physical function.

Teresina has taken several workshops since the beginning of the year. She feels that they deepen the way she’s already been practicing. Each one addressed a different area of health – nutrition, function, and breath. All three of these areas need to be addressed concurrently. Gyrotonic is the vehicle she uses to teach movement. Through teaching, opportunities open up for her to introduce other modalities for a holistic program. She’s studied nutrition and exercise her entire life and believes that everything we do outside the studio affects our workouts and vice versa. Somedays one area of health needs more attention. Teresina sees her job as facilitating the process of bringing all areas of fitness into balance for her clients.
